Missoni Plush Teddy Bear …for the Philanthropist

Ok, so I know it’s far too early to think about Christmas shopping BUT, when I saw this legendary design that helps a worthy cause, I just had to share it with you!

Missoni for Orphan Aid Africa:

Here are the new, adorable Missoni teddy’s, exclusively at Holt Renfrew, in support of OrphanAid Africa.

This plush teddy bear and elephant have been designed in iconic Missoni trademark zig zag-print in support of OrphanAid Africa (oaafrica.org) to help orphans and vulnerable children in Ghana grow up in safe in family settings with appropriate care and protection.

In addition to being incredibly chic, these limited-edition stuffed animals are helping children with a portion of the sales from each $50 stuffed toy going toward Holt Renrew’s $100,000 donation to OrphanAid Africa.

As for me, I’m getting a head start on Christmas shopping and picking up a few of these kind-hearted creatures for each of my children (and one cuddly shelf-ornament for me too!).  I’ll be sure to let my children know that their little teddy is warming hearts all around the world!

Wine Pairing Tips for a Cure

My sincere gratitude to Gwendolyn Osborn, Director of Education and Content and resident wine expert for Wine.com for today’s guest post on Wine Pairings (using fabulous wines that give back!). xo!:

Over twenty years ago the pink ribbon was introduced as the official symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness month (now known fondly as ‘Pinktober’ to many). Here at Philanthropistas.com and Wine.com we’d like to raise a glass to the anniversary of the powerful symbol and the importance of awareness, specifically with a few of our labels at Wine.com that give back directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation:

ONEHOPE California Chardonnay – ONEHOPE donates 50% of profits from the sale of every bottle of its Chardonnay to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This Chardonnay is handcrafted with a blend of grapes from select vineyards throughout Napa, Sonoma and the      Central Coast of California. It is blended with Muscat and Chenin Blanc,  displaying a pale gold color with aromas of fresh apple blossom and      honeysuckle, and flavors of crisp pear and apple. The balance of oak and bright acidity makes it a great match with broiled or grilled seafood,      poultry dishes and a wide assortment of cheeses.

J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon –  J. Lohr donates $2 of the sale of every bottle of Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a classically dark color with a bright hue with aromas of currant, cherry and black plum, complemented by a bouquet of roasted hazelnuts and espresso. The entry is fruit-driven and supple, while the finish shows an integration of fruit and oak components from the  traditional French oak barrel aging.

Wines 4 Cures 4 Her, Chardonnay – 4 Her Chardonnay was created to raise funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This is a classic, cool-climate example of Chardonnay – clean and crisp, with flavors of lime and green apples, with a hint of vanilla. It’s a great match for scallops with mango salsa.

Cheers to a happy ‘Pinktober’!

Gwendolyn Osborn is the Director of Education and Content and resident wine expert for Wine.com. She’s a wine educator at heart, hoping her enthusiasm for wine will increase peoples’ enjoyment of the beverage. She received the Diploma in Wine & Spirits through the London-based WSET though this is by no means an end to her studies – wine knowledge is a never-ending pursuit – the more you know, the more you learn you don’t know and the more you want to taste!

L’oreal Paris ~ Color of Hope Collection ~ Ovarian Cancer Research Fund

A sobering statistic:  More than 20,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year – and only about half will live to see the five-year mark.  To suport research, L’Oreal Paris is donating a dollar of every purchase from its Color of Hope Collection – a line of glosses, shadows, lipsticks and laquers – to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.  Check the products out at your local drugstore.

Lauren Bush and FEED Team Up With Clarins on New Makeup Bag

Lauren Bush’s FEED Projects has joined with French cosmetics company Clarins for its most ambitious partnership yet: They are aiming to feed 1 million children in two years. FEED, which supplies meals through the United Nations World Food Programme, has raised over $6 million and delivered over 60 million meals since it was founded in 2007.

Lauren Bush continues to up the ante with her FEED bags. The resulting organic cotton, recycled nylon-lined makeup bags are packed with travel-sized versions of Clarins Moisture-Rich Body Lotion, Hand and Nail Treatment Cream, and Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector.

As with all of her bags, the new addition to Bush’s collection of totes and clutches includes a number—15—denoting how many meals it will provide for children in need through a donation to the United Nations World Food Programme.

Clarins and FEED Makeup bag, $30, available July 15 at www.nordstrom.com.

The perfect way to make the season bright

Three holiday gifts for good—for as little as $10

San Francisco—This holiday, JustGive.org offers three perfect gifts that make a lasting difference. In the true spirit of the season, these gifts of charity will touch hearts and change lives.

Gifts of purpose

For friends, loved ones, colleagues, customers or hard-to-buy relatives, it’s easy to give small packages with a big impact. Helping those in need. Sharing goodwill to all. Through thoughtful eco-friendly gifts that make the world a better place.

With a few clicks of a mouse and for as little as $10, you can personalize three meaningful charity gifts:

1.  Donate to a favorite charity in their name. Several convenient JustGive online tools provide instant help if you’re not sure which charity supports a cause close to your recipient’s heart.

· Enter a zip code to find a charity and Give Locally (across the United States).

· Access the JustGive Guide of 1,000 charities grouped into 19 cause categories.

· Search the database of more than 1.8 million charities by name or by cause.

2.  Select a gift collection—Skip the fruit, wine or cheese basket and give a “basket” of four charities supporting a cause that’s special to them.

3.  Choose from 12 gift collections focused on feeding the hungry, creating homes and jobs, protecting animals and preventing cruelty, inspiring children, planting trees, saving the earth, promoting human rights, creating peace on earth . . . and more. Gift Collections start at $40 and are available for any desired amount.

Purchase a GiveNow charity e-card—The best kind of green

· Select the card and gift amount, and add your personal message. With more than a dozen holiday e-cards, you’re sure to find just the right one expressing your sentiment: Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Peace on Earth, Have a great green holiday, Season’s Greetings, Warmest Wishes, Thank you . . . and more.

· Email the card, print it on your computer or JustGive will mail it for you.

· Your recipient uses the card to support their charity of choice.

GiveNow charity gift cards never expire. Minimum value $10. A small transaction fee applies –$5 for the first card, discounted to $2 for each additional card.

These charity gifts help you wrap up holiday shopping in short order, with gifts that matter more. Available right up to the last minute, they’re great for hostess and teachers’ gifts too! Making less work for you, less waste for them. Creating a more powerful impact with your generosity of spirit.

Every gift matters

Any size gift can make a difference:

$20 fills a van with sandwiches the Covenant House delivers to homeless children on the streets

$25 supplies food for a month for a Canine Companions for Independence dog in training

$35 helps Meals on Wheels Association of America feed and check on the welfare of 5 seniors

$50 lets Foster Care Support Foundation buy winter coats, hats and gloves for 2 foster children

JustGive Founder and Executive Director Kendall Webb comments, “The economy is sputtering, people are struggling, and the need is great. We’re hoping people open their hearts and make charity their gift of choice this year. Discovering that giving less ‘stuff’ really does mean more for those in need. And by example, inspiring others to do the same!”

To spread the message of charitable giving as widely as possible this holiday, JustGive has partnered with the national Redefine Christmas movement, encouraging people to reconsider their gift giving habits. JustGive has also joined three charitable competitors to issue the $51 Bucks Challenge, asking consumers to redirect 10 percent of their holiday spending ($51) and give charity gift cards to raise money for nonprofits in need.

San Francisco-based JustGive, founded 10 years ago by Webb, a Harvard graduate and former Silicon Valley dot.com executive, has sent more than $130 million to over 65,000 charities in the past decade. For every purpose and occasion, JustGive is the only Web address donors need for online giving. They can give when, how and as often as they want through many giving options—direct and memorial donations, charity gift cards, wedding gifts, gift collections, and fund-raising registries.

The destination for online charitable giving® and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, JustGive has been recognized by Forbes as one of the Best of the Web.
